Tensile and Shade Structures in Jeddah
Tensile membrane structures for Jeddah
TMSI is a Saudi company that designs, engineers, manufactures and installs tensile membrane structures. Our factory is in the Industrial Area of Dammam, and from there we deliver projects across the Kingdom — including Jeddah and the wider Makkah Region, where some of our largest membrane areas are installed.
Design, engineering, steel fabrication, membrane manufacture and installation all sit inside one company. For a Jeddah client that means a single party accountable for the finished structure, rather than separate designers, fabricators and installers handing risk to each other.
Our work in Jeddah
At Jeddah Airport we delivered more than 10,000 m² of PVDF tensile canopies for Saudi Airlines — one of the largest single areas in our project directory. At Souq 7 we installed 2,000 m² of PVDF mesh shading for a commercial development, completed in 2023. Together, our two documented Jeddah projects cover 12,000 m² of membrane.
Nearby, our record in the region includes 65,000 m² of PTFE membrane across nine train stations in Makkah for MRDA, SAR and CRCC, and the restoration of tensile canopies at three Madinah Metro stations, carried out with zero disruption to passenger operations.
Which membrane for which use
PVDF-coated fabrics, as used at the airport and Souq 7, combine long-term UV resistance with architectural flexibility and suit commercial, residential and public shading. PTFE glass-fibre membranes are chosen for critical transit and landmark infrastructure and are built to last decades with minimal maintenance. PVC is a versatile, cost-effective choice for smaller canopies.
Where a project needs a transparent roof rather than shade — an atrium, a courtyard, an entrance canopy — we offer ETFE, our flagship system. ETFE weighs about 1% of equivalent glass, transmits up to 95% of natural light and does not shatter. Our completed ETFE roofs are in Dammam, Khobar and Al Jubail, and the foils and cushions for any Jeddah project would be welded and tested in the same Dammam factory.
From design to handover
Our designers take every structure through form finding, finite element analysis, connection detail design and climatic analysis. Load analysis then determines foundation size, steelwork and fabric pre-stress. In the factory we cut patterns with minimal wastage, join and detail them, and run mock-ups and fabric tests so that nothing is improvised on site.
Installation is led by TMSI supervisors who coordinate site crews and local labour, manage cranes and mechanical equipment, and work to health and safety plans, method statements and risk assessments until handover.
After handover
Because we manufacture our own membranes, larger replacement sections can be made to exact specification in the factory and installed with minimal disruption, while smaller repairs are carried out on site. We also run preventive inspection programmes tailored to each structure. TMSI holds ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certification and Saudi Aramco 9COM qualification.
Frequently asked questions
Has TMSI completed projects in Jeddah?
Yes. TMSI delivered more than 10,000 m² of PVDF tensile canopies at Jeddah Airport for Saudi Airlines and 2,000 m² of PVDF mesh shading at the Souq 7 commercial project in 2023. In the wider region we also have 65,000 m² of PTFE membrane across nine train stations in Makkah.
Do you offer ETFE roofs in Jeddah?
Yes, ETFE can be supplied to Jeddah from our Dammam factory, where the foils are patterned and welded and every cushion is test-inflated before dispatch. Our completed ETFE references today are in Dammam, Khobar and Al Jubail. We size the system, the frit and the number of layers for each project at design stage.
Can TMSI repair or maintain existing tensile canopies?
Yes. We carry out small repairs on site and manufacture larger membrane sections to exact specification in our factory for installation with minimal disruption. We restored the tensile canopies at three Madinah Metro stations with zero operational disruption, and we offer scheduled inspection programmes tailored to each structure.
