Shade and shelter where patients arrive

A hospital's outdoor spaces — the main entrance, the drop-off zone, covered walkways and car parks — are used by people who are unwell, elderly or carrying children, often in the heat of the day. Tensile membrane canopies bring shade to these spaces, shaped around the vehicle and pedestrian routes beneath them.

TMSI designs, engineers, manufactures and installs membrane structures from its factory in Dammam. For healthcare clients we work outside and inside the building: tensile canopies and shades and ETFE roofs by TMSI, and lighting and stretch ceilings through our sister company Dilight.

Our healthcare-related work

For the Almana Group we built several PVC tensile canopies over the courtyard of Almana Park, the group's hospital in Khobar. Through Dilight we delivered the lighting and ceilings across the group's healthcare buildings: Almana General Hospital and the Oncology Center in Dammam, the Specialist Clinics, Almana Medical Center in Al Rakah, the Royal Suites in Khobar and the Medical Towers in Khobar and Jubail. Almana and Mouwasat both appear on our client list.

In health education, TMSI designed, supplied and installed more than 1,500 m² of double-layer ETFE cushions on the arched roof at MACHS, the Mohammed Al-Mana College for Health Sciences in Dammam, completed in 2023.

Through Dilight we also supplied and installed the lighting and ceilings in three Almana buildings that have since won international design awards: Almana General Hospital in Aziziah, Dammam (Architecture MasterPrize 2025, A' Design Award 2024), the Dunes Auditorium at MACHS (A' Design Award 2021) and Almana Medical Center (A' Design Award 2022). The awards went to the buildings' architects; our part was the lighting and ceilings.

Choosing a system for a healthcare site

PVC tensile fabric is a versatile, cost-effective choice for entrance canopies and smaller shades. PVDF-coated fabric combines long-term UV resistance with architectural flexibility and is our most common choice for car park shades. PTFE glass-fibre membrane is used where a structure must last decades with minimal maintenance.

Where a hospital wants daylight rather than shade — a courtyard, a light well, an atrium or a covered walkway — ETFE is an option. It transmits up to 95% of natural light, does not shatter and cannot fall as sharp debris. ETFE foil is self-extinguishing and carries classifications including DIN 4102 Class B1 and EN 13501-1 Class B-s1,d0, with certification issued for the specific foil supplied on each project.

Working on a live hospital site

Hospitals do not close for construction, so preparation matters. Our approach is that nothing is figured out on site: patterns, mock-ups and fabric tests are completed in the factory, and assemblies arrive finished and numbered. From the start of each project we put in place health and safety plans, method statements and risk assessments, and our ISO 45001-certified safety system includes working-at-height controls and lifting plans reviewed before any elevated work.

Quality is governed through inspection and test plans with hold points, non-conformance tracking and formal handover with operation and maintenance manuals, under ISO 9001. After handover we offer specialist repairs and scheduled inspections; on the Madinah Metro we restored tensile canopies at three stations with zero operational disruption.

Award-winning buildings we worked on

These healthcare buildings won international design awards. The awards went to their architects; our part is stated under each one.

  • Almana General Hospital, Aziziah, Dammam — Our work: lighting and ceilings, supplied and installed through Dilight. The hospital was designed by the Almana Engineering Department and built by others.
  • Dunes Auditorium, Mohammed Al-Mana College for Health Sciences (MACHS) — Our work: lighting and ceilings through Dilight. This is a separate project from the ETFE stadium roof we built for the same college.
  • Almana Medical Center — Our work: lighting and ceilings through Dilight.

Frequently asked questions

What type of canopy suits a hospital entrance?

A tensile membrane canopy is a practical choice, designed around the drop-off layout and the routes beneath it. PVC is a cost-effective fabric for smaller canopies, PVDF adds long-term UV resistance, and PTFE suits structures that must last decades. Where daylight is wanted, an ETFE canopy is also possible.

Has TMSI worked for hospitals?

Yes. For the Almana Group we built PVC tensile canopies over the courtyard of Almana Park, the group's hospital in Khobar, and through Dilight we delivered the lighting and ceilings at Almana General Hospital, Almana Medical Center, the Oncology Center, the Specialist Clinics, the Royal Suites and the Medical Towers. We also built the 1,500 m² ETFE roof of the stadium at MACHS, the Mohammed Al-Mana College for Health Sciences.

Can you install without disrupting hospital operations?

We plan for it from the start. Fabrication, mock-ups and fabric testing are done in our Dammam factory, so site time is spent on erection rather than problem solving, under method statements and risk assessments. Our restoration of three Madinah Metro stations was completed with zero operational disruption.
