South Dahran Housing (Aramco)
PTFE and HDPE fabric
Project overview
At Saudi Aramco's South Dhahran Housing, TMSI delivered shade structures using two fabrics, PTFE and HDPE. The project dates from 2020.
Combining fabrics lets each area get the membrane that suits it. PTFE-coated glass-fibre is built to last for decades with minimal maintenance and gives a crisp, permanent finish. HDPE shade net is knitted and breathable, letting hot air escape, and is an economical way to shade larger areas such as parking.
TMSI's in-house team covers design, engineering, manufacturing in the Dammam factory and installation, and works with PTFE, PVDF, PVC, HDPE and ETFE. Every TMSI tensile design goes through form finding and finite element analysis, and the resulting load calculations set the size of the foundations and steelwork and the pre-stress of the fabric.
